JOHANNESBURG - The City of Joburg is celebrating 30 years of the Arts Alive International Festival with an exciting lineup of cultural content.
Every year, the festival showcases visual arts, theatre, music, poetry, comedy, dance, masterclasses, and workshops.Aloota Continuaforms part of the programmes that have been rolled out.
Aloota Continuais a stage reading in English and isiZulu. It deals with the 2021 uprising organised by supporters of former President Jacob Zuma after he was jailed for contempt of the Constitutional Court.
It also looks into the loss of life and damage to shops, factories and infrastructure that were unprecedented in post-1994 history.
Despite the gains for some from the looting, the widespread theft and arson caused great economic hardship for many working-class people in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
During an interview onInside EWN, producer Allan Horwitz said that the arts needed to keep a finger on the pulse of society.
Weve compressed the stage reading into a one-hour-long stage play. The arts must be in touch with the relevant issues that affect society and even more so the working class.
The play starts with chats from two groups, one saying free Moses which reflects Zuma - and then the other group saying jail him as it takes the audience back to the 2021 July riots.
The show then goes on to have a discussion afterward as the organisers are looking to take theatre to townships and engage communities, as they want people to think back and reflect.
Alan also said the first show was well received and that they were looking forward to two more shows coming up on 12 November 2022 at the Alexandra Arts Academy and on 13 November 2022 at Doornkop Hall in Soweto.
